During her journey, she meets many different characters: pa! infully repressed women, fiercely independent woman, caring hu! mane men and the worst misogynists in India. All the while, she is chased by Raghu, who only wants her child and would like nothing better than to get rid of Vaidehi. She meets with a kind-hearted burglar when hiding in a marriage party, and finds out that the bride's, Maithili, father is unable to pay the prospective groom's parents enough Dowry. He suffers the humiliation of their taunts and threats to cancel the wedding. Maithili is anguished at her in-laws' treatment of her father. Next she meets Janki, a radically feminist theatre actress, who is in love with her co-star, Manish. Janki is pregnant and hopes to marry Manish soon. Constantly trying to thwart these plans is Purshottam, the theatre director, who is married to Lata. Lata is kept secluded in her home by her much older husband. Purshottam hopes to have an affair with Janki (or any other woman for that matter) eventually. Then Vaidehi meets a caring village midwife and local healer named Ramdulaari. She, like the rest ! of the village, is constantly terrorized by Gajendra and Virender, 2 misogynistic brothers who own most of the village. Her pride and joy, her educated son, shares a forbidden love with Gajendra's daughter, Sushma. Eventually, Vaidehi takes refuge with a bandit named Bulwa, who takes the Mother Goddess as his matron and respects women, and considers Gajendra and Virender his archenemies. Each story of injustice is followed by an explosive climax that proves that you can only push womankind so far before she pushes back.Canadian Import. SWITCH - DVD MovieBlake Edwards (Victor/Victoria) wrote and directed this sharp if somewhat underachieving satire about sexual politics, in which an unrepentant playboy (Perry King), with a long trail of broken hearts behind him, dies and comes back as a woman (Ellen Barkin). Barkin is terrific as a babe with the mind and soul of a stud, and her struggles to reconcile her male impulses with the realities of her new body are the best material in the film. Jimmy Smits is fine as her best friend (back w! hen she was a he, however), and JoBeth Williams is memorable as one of the deceased fellow's castoffs--she ironically becomes an ally of his incarnation as a woman. This isn't Edwards at his greatest, but it's a highly watchable minor entry in his canon. --Tom KeoghHighly original crime yarn with steamy romance and unique New Orleans atmosphere. A stylish homicide detective (Quaid) runs afoul of the new uptight assistant D. A. (Barkin) while investigating a local mob murder; soon theyre romantically involved even while theyre at odds professionally. Sassy and sexy with terrific Cajun music score. Written by Daniel Petrie Jr. Later a cable TV series.System Requirements:Director: Jim McBride Starring: Dennis Quaid et al. He's a smooth talker who butts heads with the new assistant district attorney, Ellen Barkin. She's rigid and plays by the rules; he is mildly corrupt. They soon find themselves romantically entwined, and a bit chagrined.

Director Jim McBride (Great Balls of Fire) was in top form with this 1987 sizzler. You may not remember the particulars of the plot, which concerns supposed gang killings and police corruption, because it is the romance that has staying power. Blame this on Quaid and Barkin, who send off enough sparks to light up Bourbon Street. They are not only sexy together, but endearing, which makes you want to like them as much as they like each other. --Rochelle O'Gorman A female detective investigating the serial murders of a sexual deviant becomes involved with a woman who is part of a club of prominent and sexually experimantal women; a club that all of the murder victims were members of.

Laurence Fishburne (WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?, THE MATRIX) is Nelson Crowe, a deep-cover CIA operative with a deadly assignment: infiltrate a highly secret industrial espionage firm. Once inside, he teams with Margaret Wells (Ellen Barkin -- SEA OF LOVE, SOMEONE LIKE YOU) a master spy and seductive manipulator, in a plot to overthrow the organization's sinister president (Frank Langella -- DAVE). It's an explosive situation as this dangerous power play leads Crowe and Wells into a darkly mysterious web of intrigue -- and shocking murder!Laurence Fishburne is so cool and confident as rogue CIA man Nelson Crowe he looks born to the game. Wearing a cagey smile and exuding a fierceness beneath his calm, he runs through a battery of tests under the watchful eyes of Ellen Barkin (! whose crooked grin reveals she's interested in more than simpl! y his pr ofessional abilities) and Frank Langella. Barkin and Langella run "The Toolshed," a private-sector version of the CIA that provides security, investigations, and covert work such as blackmail and espionage, and they've got plans for Fishburne. Little do they know that he's not as rogue as they think. As Barkin plots her palace coup with Fishburne as her strong-arm partner, CIA agent Michael Murphy (at his most sleazy and manipulative in an unbilled role) plans his own takeover. Fishburne's role recalls Deep Cover, another film where the cop finds himself so in tune with his undercover part that he becomes as ruthless as the people he's investigating. Bad Company is rarely as compelling as Deep Cover, but its cleverly twisting plot (by veteran mystery scribe Ross Thomas) and roll call of corruption makes for an entertainingly cynical thriller. Director Damian Harris proves an adept stylist with his low-key direction and sleekly handsome look, but Fishburn! e makes the film with quiet menace and cold-blooded efficiency oozing from under his calculated reserve. --Sean Axmaker

Neigborhood bookstore rivals unwittingly become e-mail pen pals in this charming remake of The Shop Around the CornerBy now, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have amassed such a fund of goodwill with moviegoers that any new onscreen pairing brings nearly reflexive smiles. In You've Got Mail, the quintessential boy and girl next door repeat the tentative romantic crescendo that made Sleepless in Seattle, writer-director Nora Ephron's previous excursion with the duo, a massive hit. The prospective couple do actually meet face to face early on, but Mail otherwise repeats the earlier feature's gentle, extended tease of saving its ! romantic resolution until the final, gauzy shot.

The underlying narrative is an even more old-fashioned romantic pas de deux that is casually hooked to a newfangled device. The script, cowritten by the director and her sister, Delia Ephron, updates and relocates the Ernst Lubitsch classic, The Shop Around the Corner, to contemporary Manhattan, where Joe Fox (Hanks) is a cheerfully rapacious merchant whose chain of book superstores is gobbling up smaller, more specialized shops such as the children's bookstore owned by Kathleen Kelly (Ryan). Their lives run in close parallel in the same idealized neighborhood, yet they first meet anonymously, online, where they gradually nurture a warm, even intimate correspondence. As they begin to wonder whether this e-mail flirtation might lead them to be soul mates, however, they meet and clash over their colliding business fortunes.

It's no small testament to the two stars that we wind up liking and caring about them de! spite the inevitable (and highly manipulative) arc of the plot! . Althou gh their chemistry transcended the consciously improbable romantic premise of Sleepless, enabling director Ephron to attain a kind of amorous soufflé, this time around there's a slow leak that considerably deflates the affair. Less credulous viewers will challenge Joe's logic in prolonging the concealment of his online identity from Kathleen, and may shake their heads at Ephron's reinvention of Manhattan as a spotless, sun-dappled wonderland where everybody lives in million-dollar apartments and color coordinates their wardrobes for cocktail parties. --Sam SutherlandBy now, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have amassed such a fund of goodwill with moviegoers that any new onscreen pairing brings nearly reflexive smiles. But each of their hopes and dreams are shattered when both are forced to join the army against their will. Torn away from home and family, Jin-tae vows to protect Jin-seok de! spite the dangersâ€"and the cost. In the searing crucible of battle, fate intervenes, forcing their bonds of faith, love and trust to be tested time and again in this suspense-filled, action-packed war drama.A big, bruising epic of the Korean War, Tae Guk Gi smashed box-office records when it played in South Korea in 2004, almost as though the country needed to re-live the trauma at a 50-year distance. For the rest of the world, this movie looks like a ground-level reckoning in a melodramatic key, with an authentic feel for battle lines as well as home front. Tae Guk Gi follows two brothers--one uneducated and forceful, the other intellectual and reserved--as they are united and then divided by the conflict. The broadly emotional story has some of the power of tales of the American Civil War, when family members found themselves on opposite sides of a battle. Director Kang Je-gyu , who made the lively female-assassin hit Shiri, takes a blunt approach t! o the material (including a Saving Private Ryan-style f! raming d evice). And at 150 minutes, he has plenty of time for head-splitting, blood-spraying combat. This movie is meant as a punch in the stomach, and it connects. --Robert HortonBillions in corrupt assets, complex money trails, strings of shell companies and other spurious legal structures. These form the complex web of subterfuge in corruption cases, behind which hides the beneficial owner- the Puppet Master and beneficiary of it all. Linking the beneficial owner to the proceeds of corruption is notoriously hard. With sizable wealth and resources on their side, they exploit transnational constructions that are hard to penetrate and stay aggressively ahead of the game. Nearly all cases of grand corruption have one thing in common. They rely on corporate vehicles- legal structures such as companies, foundations and trusts -- to conceal ownership and control of tainted assets. The Misuse of Corporate Vehicles takes these corporate vehicles as its angle of investiga! tion. It builds upon cases, interviews with investigators, corporate registries and financial institutions, as well as a ‘mystery shopping’ exercise that provide factual evidence of a criminal practice. This approach is used to understand the nature of the problem and design policy recommendations to facilitate the investigative process by unraveling the complex world of CVs. This lucidly written report is solidly built on step-by step arguments and designed to deliver practical, applicable and well substantiated recommendations. It is intended for use by policy makers in developing national legislation and regulation as well as international standard setters. It also provides helpful information for practitioners engaged in investigating corrupt officials and academics involved in the study of financial crime.Like You Know It All Poster (11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm) (2009) French Style A reproduction poster print

My Sister Bongsoon is an autobiographical novel. Through theeyes of Jiang, a precocious five-year old girl, the author relates how Bongsoon, a live-in maid who was uneducated, unloved but innocent and hard-working like most of the maids of those days, views the emerging new world of Korean reality. There is anguish, insight, but also immense painin this novel.Gong wrote: " I decided to picture Bongsoon and many other maids like her who existed in the early stages ! of economic growth and who were simply ignored amid the hctic development of that era. My Sisster Bongsoon is my personal reflection as a comfortable middle-class person on all those women who we just neglected!"A successful lawyer who in order to save her daughter is pressured into defending the innocence of a man slated to receive the death penalty.
